ADVERTISING (Shelter, Old Spice, Lucozade) language contexts and messages

See the Topics (Ads) section for lots of useful revision material. 

DO THESE ACTIVITIES
A) Which advert .........
i) shows closely cropped, extreme close-ups which contradict typical media images of models?
ii) contains pseudo-scientific graphics?
iii) contains pseudo-religious language?
iv) follows a clear eye-scan z-pattern ending with the pack-shot in the bottom right corner of the poster?
v) makes a clear graphic reference to social media, thus trying to form a bond with a younger 'switched on', digital native audience? 
vi) seems to be making fun of the whole genre of alcohol and travel advertising?
vi) uses a familiar sporting celebrity to connect with a younger audience in order to re-invent a traditional familiar brand?
vii) uses male objectification and the female gaze in order to subvert conventional advertising codes?
viii) presents the model's face in a hyperreal way, reflecting video game representations of heroes and celebrities?
ix) uses and distorts visual signifiers associated with the iconography of exotic travel and alcohol.
x) appeals to readers' social conscience and sense of guilt.

B) In your opinion, which of the 3 adverts constructs its representations most effectively in order to convey a particular mood, effect or message? Justify your views. Write at least 120 words. 

C) Use these essay titles for practice and revision. Do all the options in essay number 2. 

1) Discuss representations of gender in the advertisements you have studied [15] 
​2) In the adverts you have studied, comment on the use and effect of ONE of the following: layout, typography,  mode of address;  mise en scene [10]
3) Compare how media language is used in the construction of either ethnicity OR gender in these advertisements. [10] 

4) How do advertisers use language to sell their message? Refer to at least 2 of the adverts you have studied. [10]

 5) How do advertisers try to bypass modern audiences' resistance to persuasion? [15] - (we'll plan this one in class) 
 6) Choose 3 adverts of your own, (soft drink, male cosmetic and a homeless charity). Use these adverts as a base to answer any of the above questions.

MUSIC VIDEO - language, contexts and message . USE THE TOPICS SECTION ON MUSIC VIDEO FOR EXTRA MATERIAL, SPECIALIST KEYWORDS & TERMINOLOGY
Section A 
1) revise music video C&Cs (Language Forms Codes and Conventions). How does media language shape the construction of representations, narratives and ideologies (messages, themes and mood). How is the audience expected to respond? 
2) How does the video help to construct  a brand identity for the record label, artist or song? Which particular codes & conventions help to achieve this. 
3) revise  wider contexts of music videos - social, political, economic, cultural and historical
