Exams

WEEK 2 .    14 -18 JANUARY

Exam Review +

NEWSPAPERS IN-DEPTH STUDY
Online content - Mail Online + one other online broadsheet (e.g. Times. Guardian, Telegraph)
In –depth study Wednesday 16th Jan 2019

Spend 40 mins in the lesson and 2 hours extra looking at differences and similarities between a tabloid and a broadsheet from the same day.
Quality broadsheets may have content behind a paywall. What is this?
Why do they do it? What content can be accessed free of charge?

Look at Mail online + one quality paper
Make notes on
A) Codes & Conventions (Visuals, typography, textual, institutional codes)
B) Proportion and type of ads
C) Content
i) news or trivia? ; hard or soft? Amount of ’space’ devoted to Brexit and the Government defeat.
ii) Symbiotic links with world of showbiz, TV, film and celebrity
iii) Sport – how is it covered?
iv) Audience interaction – comment, Tweets, FB
D) Representations (women, males, youth, ethnic groups etc)

E) Contexts – social, political, economic & cultural
Think about convergence of content & the ‘tabloidization’ of quality press
Think about target audiences in terms of GEARS and ABC1 vs C2D
