NEWSPAPERS IN-DEPTH STUDY Online content - Mail Online + one other online broadsheet (e.g. Times. Guardian, Telegraph) In –depth study Wednesday 16th Jan 2019 Spend 40 mins in the lesson and 2 hours extra looking at differences and similarities between a tabloid and a broadsheet from the same day. Quality broadsheets may have content behind a paywall. What is this? Why do they do it? What content can be accessed free of charge? Look at Mail online + one quality paper Make notes on A) Codes & Conventions (Visuals, typography, textual, institutional codes) B) Proportion and type of ads C) Content i) news or trivia? ; hard or soft? Amount of ’space’ devoted to Brexit and the Government defeat. ii) Symbiotic links with world of showbiz, TV, film and celebrity iii) Sport – how is it covered? iv) Audience interaction – comment, Tweets, FB D) Representations (women, males, youth, ethnic groups etc) E) Contexts – social, political, economic & cultural Think about convergence of content & the ‘tabloidization’ of quality press Think about target audiences in terms of GEARS and ABC1 vs C2D ___________________________________________ Have all the work complete by Tuesday 22nd Jan Don't feel you need to cover all online content on the same day. |
